CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

MONEY AND THE CHRISTIAN

Teachers:  Gary Dunsmore has a BS in Electronic Engineering and an MBA in Finance from SDSU. Gary is a retired engineer and real estate investor. His wife, Chris, teaches the Women’s Precepts class here at Maranatha Chapel. His hobbies include traveling throughout Europe, hunting, skiing, and fishing. Gary also teaches classes on Creationism, Cults, Apologetics, Genesis, Angels, and Church History.

Eric Kaiser is a graduate of SDSU in Business Administration and Engineering. He served at Qualcomm, Inc. for 13 years in engineering and management positions. Eric currently serves as President of the Hopestream Foundation and is on the board of several other Christian mission organizations. Eric and his wife, Wendy, have three children and have taught and served at Maranatha Chapel in various ministries.

Description:  Money and the Christian explores the biblical teaching and examples of money management so that the believer can please God and enjoy the blessings of being a good steward. Stewardship is a God-centered lifestyle of spending, saving, and giving practices, which lead to freedom. In contrast, materialism creates a treadmill of spending more and borrowing more, which can lead to financial bondage. We will address common Christian challenges such as low savings, high debts, high spending, high lifestyle costs, low net worth, no retirement plan, no budget, no tithing, no insurance, and no sign of God in the checkbook. We will discover a Christ-centered, generous financial lifestyle that leads to joy, peace, and a sense of significance.

Materials- The book MONEY AND THE CHRISTIAN by Caleb McAffee will be made available in class for $15.00.

MINISTERING IN THE MIDST OF TRAUMA

Teacher:  Rob Booth has served as a hospital chaplain for seven years, and is currently a chaplain with the Escondido Fire Department. Rob is also a Red Cross Chaplain and is experienced in ministering in crisis situations. He trains church staff, hospital chaplains, and seminary students on how to practically minister to those who are ill, traumatized, or grieving. Rob and his wife, Rebecca, lead Maranatha Chapel’s Grief Share ministry.

Description: Classes are designed to provide resources for ministering in traumatic situations such as grief and cancer/terminal illness, and hospital visitation. This training is extremely valuable for the volunteer or church leader. All students receive a folder which includes all reference material presented in class, which is easily accessible in the event of an emergency. Classes are presented in a seminar format with handouts and booklets, including a “what to do and what not to do” list of tips.

INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY

Teacher- Josh Olson is an assistant pastor at Calvary Chapel of Escondido. He has served as the high school pastor, a teacher at Calvary Chapel of Escondido’s School of Ministry, and for the past four years as an “open air preacher” in Escondido’s Grape Day Park. Josh is also involved in world missions, focusing on encouraging missionaries through God’s Word and prayer.

Description: When it comes to your personal study of God’s Word, ask yourself two questions:  What do I want to accomplish? and Is what I am doing getting me there? Inductive Bible Study attempts to discover the facts of the text through three steps: observation (analyze the text), interpretation (rediscovering the author’s original intent for writing the text), and application (How does this text apply to my life personally?). The Inductive Bible Study method has been used for years by pastors and serious Bible students.

Materials: A class notebook will be available the first night of class for $15.00.

WHAT IS ISLAM?

Teacher: Daniel Massieh was born in Egypt into a Muslim family. At the age of 23, he converted to Christianity and immediately began publicly sharing his faith. From bus stops, to elevators, to taxi drivers, Daniel proclaimed the message of the gospel whenever and wherever he could. Eventually he was arrested and put into prison where he spent eight months in solitary confinement. After his release Daniel went to Spain as a missionary, and in 1985 came to the United States where he has been involved in outreach to Muslims.

Description: What Is Islam? Is a strategy for reaching Muslims with the gospel of Christ by introducing the world of Islam, its culture, history, and teachings. This class will provide answers for your Muslim friend’s questions or objections to the gospel. Learn the major differences between Islam and Christianity, as well as the basic Christian doctrine that has proven effective in sharing the gospel with Muslims. The first half of the class will be devoted to the history and background of the ancient Near East, out of which Islam was born, and the second half will be devoted to Islam itself.
